  • Water released from Mettur Dam has reached Veeranam lake and it is brimming with water.
  • Veeranam lake meets more than 35% of water requirement in Chennai city.
  • The total capacity of the lake is 1,465 million cubic feet (mcft) of water.
  • Everyday 6 mcft (180 million litres) is being drawn from the lake.
  • The Chennai city’s water requirement is  5 million cubic feet  (mcft) per day.
  • This water reaches the city through pipes passing through Villupuram and Kancheepuram districts.
History
  • Veeranam Lake was built in the Tenth Century during the time of Greater Cholas, from 907–955 AD.
  • It was created by Rajaditya Chola.
  • He named it after his father Parantaka I Chola, who had the title "Veeranarayanan".
  • Veeranarayanan lake later came to be called as Veeranam Lake.
  • Veeranam lake gets water from Kollidam via Vadavaru River and water released from Mettur Lower Anaicut.
