The Supreme Court has increased Voter Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) verification to five random Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in each Assembly segment/constituency.
Under the earlier guidelines of Election Commission of India (ECI), the VVPAT slips from only one EVM in every Assembly segment/constituency was subjected to physical verification.
ECI’s sample verification for the April-May Lok Sabha polls would cover 4,125 EVMs and VVPATs.
VVPAT
Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) is a device which dispenses a slip with the symbol of the party for which a person has voted for.
The slip appears on a small window for seven seconds and then drops in a box. The voter cannot take it home.
VVPAT displays candidate’s serial number, Name of the candidate and Corresponding symbol for whom the vote has been cast.
