The Climate scientist, Wallace Smith Broecker, who popularised the term “global warming” has died.
Broecker brought “global warming” into common use with a 1975 article that correctly predicted rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere would lead to pronounced warming.
The article published by him in 1975 was titled “Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?””
He was also a pioneer in radiocarbon and isotope dating and became the first person to recognise the ocean conveyor belt, a global network of currents affecting everything from air temperature to rain patterns.
His notable awards include,
Vetlesen Prize in 1987
Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 2002.
