WHO report on antibacterial research

  • WHO released its annual report titled “2023 Antibacterial agents in clinical and preclinical development: an overview and analysis”.
  • India contributes only 1% to the global antibacterial research and development (R&D) pipeline.
  • 84% of antibacterial R&D is concentrated in high-income countries, with another 12% in upper-middle-income economies.
  • But the lower-middle-income countries including India, are contributing only 4%.
  • The new antibacterial agents being developed in China and the Russian Federation are 3% and 2%, respectively.
  • India and South Africa are each contributing 1%.
