- Honouring the president's speech, May 18 was marked as World AIDS Vaccine Day.
- The first international AIDS Vaccine trial which took place in 1997.
- The trial was named RV144.
- It was the first-ever trial against HIV that showed a combination of two vaccines reduced the risk of HIV infection by 31%.
- The day was first observed a year later in 1998.
- HIV has caused the death of 40.1 million people so far.
- According to WHO data, 38.4 million people are living with the virus estimated at the end of 2021.
