  • On May 18, 1997, former US President Bill Clinton delivered a speech regading HIV vaccine at the Morgan State University in Maryland.
  • Honouring the president's speech, May 18 was marked as World AIDS Vaccine Day.
  • The first international AIDS Vaccine trial which took place in 1997.
  • The trial was named RV144.
  • It was the first-ever trial against HIV that showed a combination of two vaccines reduced the risk of HIV infection by 31%.
  • The day was first observed a year later in 1998.
  • HIV has caused the death of 40.1 million people so far.
  • According to WHO data, 38.4 million people are living with the virus estimated at the end of 2021.
