  • Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi discovered by Carlos Chagas in 1909.
  • Also known as American trypanosomiasis, it is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.
  • It is named after Carlos Chagas, a Brazilian physician and researcher who on 14 April 1909 diagnosed the disease in a person for the first time.
  • This disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected triatomine bugs, also known as "kissing bugs."
