- The Day was first observed in the year 1954 on 14 December by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
- Later it aims to commemorate the day of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on the same day in 1959.
- On 20 November, 1989, UNGA also adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- International Children's Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare in 1925.
- The theme for this year is ‘A Better Future for Every Child’.
