World Cities report 2024

  • Recently, the UN-Habitat has released the ‘World Cities Report 2024: Cities and Climate Action’.
  • It highlighted that by 2040, almost two billion people residing in urban areas will face a 0.5 degree rise in temperature.
  • Cities around the world need an estimated $4.5 to $5.4 trillion investment per year to build and maintain climate-resilient systems.
  • The current financing stands at just $831 billion.
  • The average Green Spaces share in urban areas worldwide falling from 19.5 per cent in 1990 to 13.9 per cent in 2020.
  • By 2040, over 2,000 cities in low coastal areas, many under 5 metres above sea level.
  • Flood exposure in cities has grown significantly, increasing 3.5 times faster than in rural areas since 1975.
