World crocodile day 2023 - June 17

  • The day is a global awareness campaign to highlight the plight of endangered crocodiles and alligators around the world.
  • The first global event was held on June 17th 2017.
  • Crocodile is among the 23 species of amphibious animals belonging to the reptile order Crocodylia.
  • It is a large aquatic reptile that lives throughout Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.
  • They congregate in freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes, wetlands.
  • Some species, like Saltwater Crocodile often live along the coastal areas.
  • India is home to three crocodilian species: the mugger or marsh crocodile, the estuarine or saltwater crocodile and the gharial.
