  • India is home to three crocodilian species
    • The mugger or marsh crocodile 
    • The estuarine or saltwater crocodile 
    • The gharial 
  • The mugger is mainly a freshwater species, and found in lakes, rivers and marshes.
  • It is found throughout the Indian subcontinent.
  • The estuarine crocodile is found in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park, the Sundarbans in West Bengal and the Andamans and Nicobar Islands.
  • The gharial is found mostly in Himalayan rivers.
  • Gharials are enlisted as critically endangered species. 
  • National Chambal Sanctuary--also called the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary--is a protected area in northern India.
  • It is located on the Chambal River near the tripoint of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Crocodile Conservation Project was launched in 1975 in different States.
  • The Gharial and Saltwater crocodile conservation programme was first implemented in Odisha in early 1975 and subsequently the Mugger conservation programme was initiated.
  • CrocBITE is an online database of crocodile attacks reported on humans.
