World Day Against the Death Penalty – October 10

  • It is a day to advocate for the abolition of the death penalty and to raise awareness of the conditions and the circumstances which affect prisoners with death sentences.
  • The day was first organized by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty in 2003.
  • 142 countries -representing 74% of the UN member states- have already stopped using the capital punishment, by either removing it from their penal code or not carrying out executions for a long time.
  • The Council of Europe has been a pioneer in the abolition process which has made Europe a de facto death-penalty-free zone since 1997.
  • The day is a European contribution to the World Day against the Death Penalty, which is held annually on the same day.
