It is a day to advocate for the abolition of the death penalty and to raise awareness of the conditions and the circumstances which affect prisoners with death sentences.
The day was first organized by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty in 2003.
142 countries -representing 74% of the UN member states- have already stopped using the capital punishment, by either removing it from their penal code or not carrying out executions for a long time.
The Council of Europe has been a pioneer in the abolition process which has made Europe a de facto death-penalty-free zone since 1997.
The day is a European contribution to the World Day against the Death Penalty, which is held annually on the same day.
