- This day highlights the importance of promoting social justice by addressing issues such as unemployment, poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, human rights and social protection.
- On November 16, 2007, the UNGA declared this day starting from the 63rd session of the General Assembly.
- On June 10, 2008, the International Labour Organization (ILO) unanimously endorsed the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization.
- The theme of 2024 is "Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances".
