- It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- The year 2022 marks the 50th WED.
- Sweden is the host this year and the theme is ‘Only One Earth’.
- Only One Earth was the motto for the 1972 Stockholm Conference.
- The United Nations Conference on Human Environment or the Stockholm conference was held in 1972.
- It was the first world conference with environment as the major agenda.
- It declared “right to live in a healthy environment” as “basic human right”.
- With this, the idea of World Environment Day was formalized.
- This conference also led to the creation of United Nations Environment Programme established by Maurice Strong.
