World food price index

  • The Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) released this price index.
  • It tracks the most globally traded food commodities.
  • It consists of the average of five commodity group price indices – cereals, oilseeds, dairy products, meat and sugar.
  • The August reading was the lowest since March 2021.
  • It is also 24% below an all-time high reached in March 2022 in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • The FAO forecasted world cereal production this year at 2.815 billion tonnes.
  • This is slightly lower from a previous estimate of 2.819 billion.
