Indian-American Soil Scientist Dr. Rattan Lal has won the 2020 World Food Prize given by the World Food Prize Foundation.
It is given to him for mainstreaming and developing a soil centric approach to increase food production that conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change.
The World Food Prize was created in 1986 with sponsorship by General Foods Corporation.
The Prize is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field of agriculture.
The Prize is presented each October on UN World Food Day (October 16).
The World Food Prize Foundation is currently run by Barbara Stinson.
It was conceived by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norman Borlaug, the Father of Green Revolution.
The first winner of this prize was MS Swaminathan in 1987, the Father of Indian Green Revolution.
