World Immunization Day

  • World Immunization Day is celebrated every year by World Health Organisation on November 10.
  • It is celebrated to make people aware about the importance of getting timely vaccinations against vaccine preventable diseases.
  • India has one of the largest Universal Immunization Programs (UIP) in the world in terms of the quantities of vaccines used, number of beneficiaries covered, geographical spread and human resources involved.
  • Government of India is providing vaccination free of cost against vaccine preventable diseases under Mission Indradhanush.
  • It includes Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Measles, severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and Meningitis & Pneumonia (across the country), Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), Japanese Encephalitis in endemic districts and Rotavirus diarrhoea in selected states.
  • Measles-Rubella vaccine, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) are being introduced in phased manner.
