World Kiswahili Language Day – July 07

  • It is observed following a declaration led by UNESCO member states.
  • This year marks the 1st observance of this day.
  • It was adopted during 41st session of UNESCO in 2021.
  • The theme for this year is ‘Kiswahili for peace and prosperity’.
  • Kiswahili language is widely spoken in Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • It is the only African language, to become the official language of African Union.
  • It is also the first African language that United Nations has recognized in this manner.
