World Leprosy Day - January 29

  • It is celebrated on the last Sunday of January to spread awareness about leprosy disease.
  • This day call for an end to leprosy-related stigma and discrimination.
  • Leprosy is also known as Hansen's disease.
  • Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen was discovered the slow-growing bacterium - Mycobacterium leprae in 1873 as the main cause of illness.
  • The theme of World Leprosy Day 2023 is "Act Now, End Leprosy”.
  • It was established in 1954 by French philanthropist Raoul Follereau.
  • Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease and is caused by a bacillus, Mycobacterium leprae.
  • It multiplies slowly and the incubation period of the disease is 5 years on average.
  • In India, it is observed on 30th January every year, coinciding with the death anniversary of Gandhi.
  • Over half of these global leprosy cases are detected in India.
  • In the year 2021, leprosy had a reported prevalence of 1,33,781 cases and an incidence (new cases) of 1,40,546 globally.
  • In India, the prevalence of leprosy is 0.4 per 10,000 population.
