- World Maritime Day is observed every year on the last Thursday of September.
- Celebrations are held to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment
- It recognizes the contribution of the international maritime industry towards the economy of the world, especially shipping.
- It was first observed in 1978 to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Convention.
- Kitack Lim is the current Secretary-General of IMO.
- The 2019 World Maritime Day theme for the year is "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community".
