World Maritime Day – September 26

  • World Maritime Day is observed every year on the last Thursday of September.
  • Celebrations are held to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment
  • It recognizes the contribution of the international maritime industry towards the economy of the world, especially shipping.
  • It was first observed in 1978 to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Convention.
  • Kitack Lim is the current Secretary-General of IMO.
  • ​​The 2019 World Maritime Day theme for the year is "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community".
