- It aims to raise awareness about the importance of the ocean and its preservation.
- The day was first proposed by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit in 1992 Rio de Janeiro.
- The day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2008.
- The theme for 2024 is “Awaken New Depth”.
