- The day was first adopted by UNESCO in 1999 at the 30th General Conference in Paris.
- It is an occasion to honour the poets, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, and promote the reading, writing, and teaching of poetry.
- It aims to support “linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard”.
