  • It was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk.
  • He led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.
  • The theme of this year's World Polio Day is “One Day. One Focus: Ending Polio – delivering on our promise of a polio-free world”.
  • Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease that affects children under the age of 5.
  • India was declared polio-free in 2014.
  • The 'Pulse Polio' programme of India was started in 1995 with an aim towards 100% eradication of the disease.
  • The pulse immunization’ using Oral Polio Vaccine was conducted in Vellore in 1981.
  • Vellore is the first Indian town to be polio-free.
  • The very last polio case was reported in West Bengal's Howrah district in 2011.
  • The last stronghold of this poliovirus is in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
