The day seeks to raise awareness on global population issues.
It was celebrated under the theme “A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all”.
The UNDP started observing the “World Population Day” in 1989.
This decision was taken after the global population reached 5 billion-mark on July 11, 1987.
The UNGA has recognized this day in December 1990.
