- The day also marks the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant (8 May 1828).
- Henry Dunant was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
- He was the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
- The Headquarters of ICRC is in Geneva, Switzerland.
