  • This disease is a blood disorder which is inherited and passed down from parents to the child.
  • In 2008, the UN General Assembly recognized sickle cell disease as a public health problem, and one of the world's foremost genetic diseases.
  • In India, it is more common in south Gujarat, north Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and western Odisha.
  • This year’s theme is Keeping Hope Alive: Sickle Cell Disease and Covid-19.
