  • World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969.
  • It marks the founding of International Telecom Union (ITU).
  • It also marks the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
  • The day has been instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference of ITU in 1973.
  • In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day.
  • Since 2006, May 17 is celebrated as both Telecom and Information Society day.
  • Observance of this day aims to raise global awareness about the use of Internet and Information and Communications Technologies
  • The theme of celebration for this year 2019 is 'Bridging the standardization gap'.

  • The theme focuses on
    • the power of data for development
    • to turn complex data into actionable information
  • The Plenipotentiary Conference is the top policy-making body of the ITU that decides the 4-year roadmap of the organization.
