  • This day aims to create awareness about the significance of thyroid gland and how we can ensure that people with thyroid diseases are properly diagnosed and have access to treatment facilities.
  • On May 25, 1965, the European Thyroid Association was founded.
  • This organisation was the first one to recognise World Thyroid Day.
  • The thyroid gland is a small gland situated at the base of the neck, that is responsible for producing two hormones - thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
  • Both iodine deficiency and excess can result in hypothyroidism as well as hyperthyroidism.
  • Approximately 4.2 crore Indians are affected by Thyroid diseases.
  • The theme for this year's is - Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
