World Vegan Day is celebrated every year on November 1 and it raises awareness about animal rights and advocates the widespread adoption of a vegan lifestyle.
The day was created in 1994 by British animal rights activist, Louise Wallis, as a way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of The Vegan Society in the UK.
Veganism is practised both as a diet (to abstain from all food items using animal products) as well as a philosophy (which rejects the commodity status of animals). One who practises either of the two is said to be a vegan.
