The World Wide Web, commonly known as the Web, was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.
He submitted a proposal for a "distributed information system" to facilitate sharing and updating information among researchers at CERN.
The first web server, "httpd," and the first web browser, "WorldWideWeb" (later renamed Nexus), were created by Berners-Lee and his colleague Robert Cailliau in 1990.
