  • World Zoonoses Day is held every year on July 6.
  • The day commemorates July 6, 1885, when Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first vaccine against Rabies virus, a zoonotic disease.
  • The day raises awareness about the risk of zoonotic diseases.
  • 75 percent of the new or emerging diseases originate in animals.
  • More than 60 percent of known infectious diseases in people, such as the rabies virus, ringworm and salmonella, are transmitted from animals.
