World’s deepest lake in peril

  • Lake Baikal, holding one-fifth of the world’s unfrozen fresh water is undergoing its gravest crisis in recent history.
  • Baikal in Russia’s Siberia is a natural wonder of “exceptional value to evolutionary science” meriting its listing as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • Baikal lake is the deepest lake in the world.
  • Explosion of rotten algal blooms which is unnatural to Baikal, and commercial fishing has led to decline of Omul, a species of Salmon family found exclusively in Baikal lake.
  • Since the population declining consequence is irreversible the Russian government introduced a ban on all commercial fishing of Omul.
