World’s oldest nanostructures

- Scientists have discovered the oldest known human-made nanomaterials in the “unique black coatings” of ancient pottery shards.
- These potteries, dated to 600 BC, were unearthed from the archeological site in Keezhadi, Tamil Nadu.
- The research was published recently in the journal Scientific Reports.
- It revealed that these coatings are made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
- CNTs are tubes of carbon that are a billionth of a metre in diameter.
- CNTs are tubular structures of carbon atoms arranged in an ordered manner.
- They have enabled the layer to last more than 2600 years.
- CNTs have superlative properties, including high thermal and electrical conductivity, and very high mechanical strength.
- Before this, the oldest known carbon nanostructures were found in Damascus blades at Syria from the 16th-18th century CE.
