Writ Petition about Abortion

  • The Supreme Court has admitted a writ petition seeking to decriminalise abortion and allowing women the right to exercise their reproductive choice.
  • According to Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act of 1971, Abortion is not permissible after 20 weeks of pregnancy in India.
  • MTP Act protects married women by allowing them to terminate an “unplanned and unwanted pregnancy” but the same is not extended to single women.
